About the event
Before cloth, there was felt
Felting likely predates woven fabric by thousands of years. Early people discovered that wool fibers naturally tangle and bind when exposed to moisture, heat, and pressure. No loom. No spinning. Just hands, water, and movement.
Some of the earliest known felted objects date back to Central Asia around 6000–6500 BCE.
Small felted animals and figures often carried symbolic meaning—protection, luck, fertility, or connection to place.
Felting has long been tied to animal forms, especially birds (messengers, freedom, seasonal change).
Because felting is sculptural, it naturally lends itself to storytelling objects—things meant to be held, gifted, or kept close rather than displayed behind glass.
